Yes, there are antique French patchwork quilts!

At a Parisian antique fair recently, several French patchwork quilts dating from the nineteenth century caught my eye. The first one had lovely denim and raspberry hues. The second one, with a typical floral design on the front, had  had its back patched over and over again!

But it was the third one that came home with me: an infinite variety of  prints from the first half of the nineteenth century! The fabrics look similar to those in Dutch quilts from the same time, but the quilting is different, and  the Dutch ones lack  large borders.  This charming piece is filled with cotton and  lined with white linen.

My thanks go to Monique Alphand, (who showed her wonderful collection of French antique quilts in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines in 2012), and to An Moonen for the information they provided.
